How to take care of your legs, venous health

In Clinica Cardiovascular, we are aware that one of the major conditions that suffer our patients are the discomfort in the legs, secondary to Varices and Venous Insufficiency, so that an early specialized evaluation and care, can improve this problem.

Below we will mention a series of recommendations and tips to keep your venous circulation healthy and protect your veins to reduce the risk of discomfort in your legs.

1. Avoid standing, standing or sitting for long periods of time. When for work or long trips in car, airplane or bus, you must remain a long time sitting, it is recommended not to cross the legs; whether you are sitting or standing for long periods, you should move your feet and legs frequently and take short walks to encourage venous return

2. Legs up. To improve the functioning of the veins and after long periods of sitting or standing, it is advisable to lie down and raise your legs above the level of the heart. In the case of pregnant women, you should also lie down on your left side and, for convenience it is recommended to place a pillow between your legs.

3. Use therapeutic socks (compression). The doctor will assess the degree of compression and size, more suitable for each person.

4. Follow a balanced and low salt diet. Both overweight and constipation can affect circulation. To prevent them, a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables and cereals is key; As well as minimize salt consumption to retain less fluids.

5. Hydration, inside and out. Drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily. In addition, it is advisable to also moisturize the skin with specialized products (creams, etc.) to keep the skin elastic and activate the blood circulation of these areas, it is important to massage your legs from the feet to the thighs.

6. Sport is fundamental. It is advisable to practice moderate physical exercise on a regular basis. Sports such as swimming or walking daily, including dancing, gymnastics and cycling, help activate blood circulation.

7. After the working day, activate the irrigation with a shower and a massage. At the end of the daily shower, we will apply cold water to the calves upwards to relieve the feeling of heaviness. They also help massage with cold gels or moisturizing creams, upward from the foot to the knee, to activate the blood return.

8. The footwear and clothing, better wide. Very tight clothing is not advisable, since it can hinder the venous return from the legs to the heart. Likewise, the use of wide and comfortable footwear is preferred, without an excessive heel.

9. Avoid heat. Since high temperatures promote dilatation of the veins, it is important to avoid directed heat sources directly at the legs: do not take the sun in the legs for a long time, nor wax with hot wax, or saunas.

10. While sleeping or resting you can raise your feet from the bed about 15cm. This favors your venous return during sleep and decreases inflammation.
